Diabetes has become an epidemic. At least 171 million people worldwide have diabetes, and this figure is likely to double by 2030. Here’s a snapshot of how its affecting the world:

• Around 3.2 million deaths every year are attributable to complications of diabetes. That means that there are six deaths every minute.
• 1 in every 20 deaths is caused by diabetes
• Diabetes is an important 'silent killer disease' as there is usually no early symptom of the disease. The commonest early symptom is feeling thirsty

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Hyperglycemia and other related disturbances in the body’s metabolism can lead to serious damage to many of the body’s systems.
